Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Messages, WhatsApp, and Meta outage (March 5, 2024)

If you’re experiencing issues accessing your Facebook, Instagram, Threads, or other Meta-owned accounts, you’re not alone; hundreds of thousands of users are reporting the same issue around the globe. Here’s what we know at Untrendy Marketing.

Why is Facebook/Instagram/Threads/Meta/Messages down right now?

We don’t really know. According to The Wall Street Joournal, Meta spokesman Andy Stone shared to X (formerly Twitter), “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”

Has Meta released an official statement on the outage?

Not at this time. They have not responded to inquiries from major news outlets like The Wall Street Journal or USA Today. The closest we’ve gotten to a formal comment is Andy Stone’s aforementioned Tweet. Meta has made no comment on the correlation between the outage and Super Tuesday.

When will Facebook/Instagram/Threads/Meta/Messages be live again?

Once again, we don’t really know. The last time there was a major outage in 2021, the platforms were inaccessible for 6 hours.

When did the outage start?

Users started reporting issues around 10:05 am ET, according to Downdetector, a platform that allows people to self-report issues with an online platform. These outage reports peaked around 10:38am ET, with about 470,000 reports. These self-reports have since decreased, although the current level is at around 170,000 reports as of 11:55am ET.

What should I do?

While this isn’t legal advice and you should definitely monitor what’s happening through other news channels too, our recommendation is to wait it out. If Facebook is telling you your password is incorrect, don’t try changing it at this time. Once your access has been fully restored, however, we have recommendations to safeguard your Facebook account here. This is especially important if you have access to a business page on Facebook.
